Jean M. (Douglass) Womer, 83, of Worcester, passed away peacefully after a brief illness. Jean died on June 25, 2006 at St. Vincent Hospital surrounded by her family.
Jean, the daughter of Edna May (Chappell) and Jesse Douglass, was born in Salinas, California. She graduated from Salinas Union High School and from the University of California at San Jose (San Jose State University). She moved to Worcester after World War II and spent the remainder of her life there. Jean taught in the Worcester Public School system for 30 years, spending most of her career at Burncoat Preparatory School. Jean was a member of the Retired Teachers Association, the Educational Association of Worcester, the Massachusetts Teachers Association, and the National Educational Association. She was also an active member of St. Michael’s-on-the-Heights Episcopal Church in Worcester.
Jean was predeceased by her husband of 61 years, Ralph P. Womer. She is survived by her brother, Stanley Douglass; her children, Paul and Abigail (Van Doren) Womer, Ronald and Sara (Womer) Lohnes, of Worcester, and Alan Womer and his partner, Regan Kleber; her grandchildren, Erica (Lohnes) and Carl Troy, Rachel (Lohnes) and Stephen Fanning, Adam Lohnes, Benjamin Womer, and Timothy Womer; one great-grandchild, Benjamin Anthony Womer; and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Jean Womer’s life will be held at St. Michael’s-on-the-Heights Episcopal Church, 340 Burncoat Street in Worcester, on Saturday, the first of July at 11:00 AM.
