Robert A. Mendes, 78, of New Bedford passed away Tuesday, November 14, 2023 at St. Luke's Hospital after a brief illness.
Born in Nantucket, the son of the late Antone and Alice (Nichols) Mendes, he lived in Nantucket and New Bedford for most of his life.
He was a graduate of Nantucket High School.
Robert honorably served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War.
He was formerly employed as an orderly at St. Luke's Hospital and later as a waiter at various local establishments until his retirement.
Robert was a very caring person, always thinking of his family. He enjoyed walking throughout the City of New Bedford and loved spending time with his nieces and nephews, always giving them little surprises. He was also a devoted caregiver to his sister and brother-in-law, Carol and Donald Gomes.
He is survived by his nieces and nephews, Donelle Gomes-Talley, Anthony Fox and his wife Lori, Christopher Fox, Cheryl Fox, Deanne Gomes-Stanley, and Aaron Fox and his wife Jamie; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
He was predeceased by his sisters, Carol Gomes and Donna Fox.
