SALEM - Chester J. Sawulski, 87, husband of Janina (Sowa) Sawulski, of Salem, died Tuesday morning, June 27, 2006 in the Salem Hospital following a brief illness.
Born in Thompson, CT, he was the son of the late John and Julia (Schenska) Sawulski. At the age of two he want to Poland with his parents and resided there until 1941, when he was placed in Nazi internment camps as a US citizen. He was held for 38 months until being repatriated through an international exchange of prisoners in 1944. He returned to the US in 1945 and resided in Salem since that time.
Mr. Sawulski worked as a tailor for over 40 years. He learned the craft in Poland and operated his own business there before the war. Here, he worked for the Salem Laundry, Dan A. Donahue, both in Salem, and retired from Jordan Marsh in Peabody in 1981.
He was a parishioner of the St. John The Baptist Church and was a member of the St. Joseph Society, PRCU, both of Salem.
Besides his wife, with whom he shared over 67 years of marriage, he is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles & Paula Sawulski of Salem, John and Susan Sawulski of Danvers, 5 grandchildren, Charles Sawulski, Jr., Diane Stankiewicz, Jeffrey Sawulski, Gregory Sawulski, Kristine DeGregorio, 3 great grandchildren, Sarah Sawulski, Laura Sawulski, and Chad Stankiewicz. He was predeceased by a grandson, James Sawulski.
His funeral service will be held Friday, June 30, 2006 at 9 am from the Full-Spychalski Funeral Home, 84 Washington Square East, by Salem Common, Salem, followed by a funeral Mass at 10 am at the St. John The Baptist Church, Salem. Visiting hours are Thursday, 5 to 8 pm. Relatives and friends respectfully invited. Burial is in St. Mary Cemetery, Salem.
