Obituary

WOLFEBORO ---- Hector Livingston, 81, of Wolfeboro, NH, passed away peacefully on Friday, October 27, 2023, at Forestview Manor in Meredith.

Hector was a proud Scotsman, born in Scotland in 1941 and spent the first 11 years of his life in Glasgow and Fort William.

In 1952 his parents decided to join relatives in the United States and emigrated to College Park, MD. After high school graduation, he attended Famous Art School and took a training job at US Geological Survey attending Montgomery College and Maryland University at the same time. He then worked as a graphic illustrator for over 35 years at the USGS.

He had a lifelong love of "all creatures great and small" and was an enthusiastic birder. Until recent years, he was an avid painter, primarily oil paintings, but also beautiful pen and ink and pencil sketches. Many of his artworks depicted places he had visited such as castles in Scotland, villages in Germany, and places he saw in magazines and calendars. After moving to NH, he added bears, moose, and loons to his portfolio of work. He was proud to have an exhibition of his work at the Wolfeboro Public Library.

He took early retirement, and with his love of nature and animals, he started teaching art classes for young children at both private and public schools. He also taught drawing classes at the National Zoo and the Smithsonian Institution. As part of his classes, he took children to the Poplar Springs Animal Sanctuary where they learned about the abused, abandoned, and neglected farm animals, and then the children would draw the animals they'd seen back in the classroom.

He and his wife loved to hike and be outdoors in nature, and on a vacation, they found and fell in love with New Hampshire. They spent 10 years vacationing yearly at their cabin in Wakefield, before permanently moving up to Taylor Back Bay in Wolfeboro, NH in 2012.

Hector leaves behind his wife of 58 years Marlene, 2 daughters, Susie Hyde and Tina Cook, a sister, Margaret Kloetzli, a granddaughter Katie Jones, as well as 4 grandkitties.

A Memorial Service will be held on Thursday, November 2, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 115 S. Main Street, Wolfeboro, NH.

The family requests memorial donations in Hector’s name be made to Poplar Springs Animal Sanctuary, P.O. Box 507, Poolesville, MD 20837 or at www.animalsanctuary.org.
