George M. Porter of Abington, MA passed away peacefully at home on September 13th, 2023. He was born in Montclair, NJ in 1941 and was the husband of Carol A. (Ahearn) Porter to whom he shared his life for almost 25 years.
He is survived by his son Gary T. Porter II (wife Cindi) of New Durham, NH, and Carol’s two children Paula Grey of Pembroke and David Grey of Abington. Beloved Grandpa to Kelli, Dean, Jameson, and Bennett. He was the son of the late Donald and Hazel (Beausang) Porter of Hanson, MA and brother to the late Gary T. Porter, Captain, USMC.
George is also survived by his brothers, Richard (wife Susan) of Orleans, MA, Tim (wife Anne) of Duxbury, MA, and Bruce (wife Kathy) of Kingston, MA as well as many nieces and nephews. George was also the loving husband of Shirley Winberg of Brockton, MA who passed in 1987.
He graduated from Whitman High School in 1960 and continued his education earning a degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst Stockbridge School of Agriculture. Upon graduation, George followed his brother Gary and friend Frank Boden to Arizona to work for the Forestry Department. They drove in Frank’s corvette over Route 66 which was a big thrill for all. Once home, George and Gary enlisted in the Marine Corp. After basic training, George was stationed at Weymouth Air Base and brother Gary became a helicopter pilot serving in Vietnam where he died. George and his brothers missed him every day. George’s career was spent as Bureau Chief for the Department of Agriculture, Massachusetts.
For many years, the Porter family owned and operated Porter Farm in Hanson, MA selling apples, cider, Christmas trees and wreaths.
Together, George and Carol created 24+ years of wonderful and adventurous memories as world travelers, vacationing in over 71 destinations worldwide with Alaska being George’s favorite due to its captivating and majestic landscape.
He was a true fan of Boston sports teams, attending 3 Patriots Superbowl wins and attending the Red Sox World Series game 6 win against the St. Louis Cardinals in 2013. His favorite event was the first Patriots Superbowl win against St. Louis in 2002.
His neighbors and friends appreciated his beautiful roses that greeted them by the front door.
George was a Little League and soccer coach in Whitman for many years and served on the Conservation Committee for 40+ years.
He looked forward to the annual Porter Boys fishing trip to northern Maine, ceremoniously kicking off the weeklong trip with a batch of homemade chili.
When at home, George was entertained by Western movies, most notable his favorite actor John Wayne.
George was the most kind, caring, generous and selfless person to his family and friends always willing to lend a helping hand or a kind word. He will be forever loved and missed by all who knew him.
Family and friends are invited to attend his visiting hours on Monday September 18 from 4:00-7:00 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman and his funeral service on Tuesday September 19 at 11:00 AM in the First Congregational Church, 639 High Street, Hanson. Burial will follow in the Fern Hill Cemetery.
