Obituary

Mrs. Florence M. (Smith) Sweeney, a long time resident of Medford, age 89, died at the Bears Hill Nursing Center in Stoneham, Thursday evening, June 22, 2006, following a lengthy illness. She was the beloved wife of the late John A. Sweeney.
Born in Boston, Massachusetts, on May 17, 1917, she was a daughter of the late Alfred and Mabel (Porter) Smith. Mrs. Sweeney was a long time member of the North Street Union Congregational Church in Medford. She was a very independent women who enjoyed traveling, flea markets and most of all collecting antique dolls. She was a graduate of the Rittner School of Floral Design and attended Burdett Business College. She had been employed by Mahoney’s in Winchester and retired from Harvard Coop after several years of employment. She was the loving mother of Judy and her husband William Haywood of Medford; devoted sister of Marilyn Devlin of Medford and the late Alfred “Bud” Smith, Jr.; cherished aunt of Janet Szczuka of Salem and several other nieces and nephews. Her funeral service was celebrated in the Beals-Geake-Magliozzi Funeral Home, 29 Governors Avenue, Medford, Monday, June 26, 2006, at 10 AM. Many relatives and friends attended. Visiting hours were Sunday, June 25, 2006, from 4 to 7 PM. Interment was in Puritan Lawn Memorial Park, Peabody. Donations in Florence’s memory may be made to the North Street Union Congregational Church, 144 North Street, Medford, MA 02155.
