Obituary

WORCESTER____Jose F. Barrera, 60, of 11 Fairbanks St., died Wednesday June 21 in Parkview Hospital, Leicester.

He leaves his wife of 35 years, Mariana (Fuentes) Barrera; his children, Fioldalisa Barrera – Thomas, Sediles “Sadie” Barrera, Jose M. Barrera, Alberto Barrera, Jesus Barrera and Madelyn “Maggie” Barrera, all of Worcester; three brothers, Jesus Barrera and Jose Manuel Barrera, both of Lawrence and Angel Barrera of the Dominican Republic; four sisters, Fioldalisa Ayala of the Dominican Republic and Anna Francisca Suriel, Socorro Maracallo and Bienvenida Familia all of Worcester; eleven grandchildren and many nephews and nieces. He was predeceased by a brother, Luis Barrera. He was born and raised in the Dominican Republic, a son of Manuel M. and Flora (Acevedo) Barrera and has lived here since 1970.

Mr. Barrera owned and operated the Arecibos Market and Sandra’s Market both on Main Street Worcester for many years. Before then he was a machine operator 10 years for Jamesbury Corp. He was a long active and devout member of his parish, St. Paul’s Cathedral and also served as a Eucharistic Minister there. Jose became a United States citizen in 1980. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. Mr. Barrera was famous for saying “no dejen de ir a la misa”.

The funeral will be held on Saturday June 24 with a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in St. Paul’s Cathedral, 15 Chatham St. Burial will be in St. John’s Cemetery. Calling hours in St. Paul’s Cathedral 15 Chatham St., are Friday June 23 from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul’s Cathedral, 15 Chatham St., Worcester, MA 01609.
