Arthur Pestana husband of the late Norma (Lowney) Pestana known to others as Pete to some,passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at Lowell General Hospital on August 13, 2023 at the age of 100. He was born on June 29, 1923, in Lowell, the son of the late Frank and Augusta Pestana. After spending some years in Madeira, his family returned to Lowell where he received his education in the Lowell School system.
Arthur was an adventurous spirit who enjoyed motor cycling,water skiing, snow skiing, and hunting with his friends and family, he also enjoyed,traveling,casino’s, and a good jelly donut. He was a dedicated and diligent individual, demonstrating a remarkable ability to fix almost anything in his basement workshop. His versatile skills earned him the reputation of a true jack of all trades.
In his early years, Arthur enlisted in the US Navy just before the attack on Pearl Harbor. He valiantly served throughout World War II, and his ship, the USS Detroit, was stationed in Tokyo Bay during the announcement of Japan's surrender, marking the end of hostilities. He received the World War Il Victory Medal,American Area Medal,and the Asiatic Pacific Medal with 3 Stars for his service.
An avid traveler, Arthur and his beloved wife, Norma (Lowney) Pestana, embarked on countless adventures across the country in their RV. Arthur’s zest for life was highlighted by his daily rituals, which included never missing his morning donut and evening glass of wine which attributed to his long life.
Arthur’s legacy is carried on by his devoted children: Kathryn Murphy and her husband William of Lowell, Jane Sousa and her husband Steven of Lowell, Timmy Pestana of Lowell, and daughter-in-law Kelly Morin of Dracut. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren: Robert and William Murphy, Jill and Emily Sousa, Michael Pestana and his wife Angel, and Amy Pestana. His great-grandchildren Mya, Joshua, Jacob, and Jaeda which brought him immeasurable joy. Additionally, Arthur is survived by nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.
He was predeceased by his son Steven Pestana, his brother Frank Pestana, and his sister Mary Andrade.
You are invited to his visitation on Monday, August 21, 2023 from 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. at the McDonough Funeral Home, 14 Highland Street, Lowell, MA 978-458-6816. His funeral service will take place in the funeral home at the conclusion of the calling hours at 4 p.m..
