Obituary

DRACUT Jose C. Nunes, aged 72, passed away peacefully surrounded by his loving family after a brief illness on Friday, July 28, 2023, at Lowell General Hospital. He was the cherished husband of Irene (Sousa) Nunes, and together, they enjoyed a loving and devoted marriage that spanned 48 years.

Born on October 18, 1950, in Faja dos Vimes, Sao Jorge, Açores and was the son of the late Jose Casimiro Nunes and the late Maria Avila. He spent his formative years in the Açores, where he attended local schools. He was a member of the Portuguese Army, serving in Angola.

Jose and Irene married in 1974, together they migrated to Canada in 1975 and later moved to the United States in 1987, establishing their home in Lowell, where they resided for 33 years. Jose was employed at American Adhesive Coating Co. for over two decades until his retirement in 2020, when they relocated to Dracut. He was a communicant of St. Anthony Church and a former member of the Portuguese American Center.

Jose had a deep affection for spending quality time with his family who affectionately referred to him as "Suave". His most cherished moments were the vacations spent in his homeland of Sao Jorge, Açores. He found great joy in fishing and playing card games with family and friends, and avidly followed his favorite teams, S.L. Benfica and the Montreal Canadiens.

In addition to his beloved wife of 48 years, Irene (Sousa) Nunes of Dracut, he is survived by his two daughters, Sonia Trottier and her husband, Justin of Tyngsboro, and Sandra Luis and her husband, Carlos of Dracut; five cherished grandchildren, Matthew and Emma Luis, and Dominic, Ethan, Eva, and C.J. Trottier and his wife Elizabeth of Florida, and his great grand son Lucien.

Jose also leaves behind his siblings, Antonio Avila and his wife, Leonor of the Açores, Teresa Avila, Manuel Nunes and his wife, Alzira of the Açores, Lucia Machado of California, Diodoro Nunes and his wife, Evangelina of California, Inês Da Silva and her husband, Manuel of Canada, Saozinha Nunes of the Açores, João Nunes of the Açores, Ana Borba and her husband, Paulo of Canada, and his brother in law Norberto Matos of the Açores.

Also survived by his loving and supporting in laws Maria do Carmo Borges and her husband, Germano of Dracut, Paulo Sousa and his wife, Maria of Lowell, Fernanda Silveira and her husband, Arthur of Lowell, Helder Sousa and his wife, Maria Guadalupe of Tewksbury, Silvina Aguiar and her husband, João of Florida, Ilidio Sousa and his wife, Michelle of Lowell, and Abilio Sousa and his wife, Cathy of North Chelmsford; two Godchildren, Paulo Machado and Chris Aguiar; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

In addition to his parents, he was welcomed into heaven by his sister, the late Fatima Matos; his father & mother in law, the late Jose Paulo and the late Albertina Sousa.

On Tuesday, August 1, 2023 all are welcome to attend his calling hours from 9-11 a.m. at McDonough Funeral Home, 14 Highland Street, Lowell 978-458-6816. His funeral mass will be offered at 12 noon at St. Anthony Church, 893 Central Street, Lowell; followed by burial at St. Mary Immaculate Conception Mausoleum in Lawrence.
