Barbara A. (Mayo) Murray, 76, of Mansfield died on Sunday June 18, 2006 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA. She was the beloved wife of Stanley D. Murray, Sr. to whom she was wed to May 24, 1952.
Born in Quincy, MA on December 5, 1929 she was a dear daughter of the late Joseph M. and Louise C. (Murphy) Mayo.
Educated in Taunton she was a 1949 graduate of Taunton High School. In 1957 she and her husband founded Stan’s Barber Shop in Mansfield where she was known as “Mrs. Stan the barber”. She had also worked as an Inspector at the former Codex Corp. in Mansfield for 12 years before retiring in 1988 and prior to that she had run a jewelry store in North Attleboro.
Barbara was an active communicant of St. Mary’s Church in Mansfield. She taught CCD at St. Mary’s Church for 10 years in the late 1960’s thru the 1970’s. She was a recipient of The Marian Medal from the Fall River Diocese. She had also formerly been active in Cub Scouts in Mansfield
She enjoyed times spent at both her homes in Mansfield and Mashpee and for the past 16 years she and her husband had wintered in Florida.
She also enjoyed softball, sailing, tennis, square dancing, golf and woodworking but most of all the times spent with her loving family. She had lived in Mansfield for the past 46 years and was formerly of Taunton.
Besides her loving husband of 54 years, she is survived by her devoted children Stanley D. Murray, Jr. of North Carolina, Patricia E. Murray of East Falmouth, Elaine M. McGrath and her husband Michael of Chelmsford and Robert A. Murray of Mansfield. Her brothers John A. Mayo of Chattanooga, Tenn. and Kenneth R. Mayo of Suffield, Conn. Also survived by her cherished 8 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and several nieces and nephews.
Her funeral, to which relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend, will be held on Friday June 23rd at 9:30 A.M from the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home 55 North main St. Mansfield followed by a mass of Christian burial celebrated at 10:30 A.M. in St. Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt St. (Route 106) Mansfield. Burial will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Mansfield.
Visiting hours will be held on Thursday June 22nd from 5-8 P.M. at the funeral home.
In lieu of flowers, Barbara’s family has requested that donations in her memory be made to St. Mary’s Expansion Fund 330 Pratt St. Mansfield, MA 02048.
