Obituary

Christina I. Benet, an investment manager and 18-year resident of the Boston area, died at her home in Weston on June 16. She was 40 years old. The cause of death was brain cancer.

Christina was a partner and co-founder of C Squared Capital, a Boston-based hedge fund. She and her husband, Kelley Murphy, had recently completed a five-year project to build a home for themselves and their sons, Dylan (7) and Ryan (2), on the site of the former Blake estate in Weston. According to Kelley, Christina’s design for their home was a perfect reflection of her personality: the result of thorough research and meticulous planning, it was unique, casually elegant, and supportive in every way of the family she loved.

The daughter and granddaughter of Cuban exiles, Christina attended the Ethel Walker School, Yale College, and Harvard Business School. She graduated from all three with academic honors and numerous lifelong friendships.

After graduation, she worked for six years as a management consultant with Bain & Company and the Liberty Mutual Company before discovering a passion for money management. Investing was a perfect fit for Christina’s professional assets: a love of research, a highly analytical mind, and the cheerful pragmatism of a born skeptic. Her investment career began in 1996 with New York-based Eagle Capital Management. In 1999, she moved to Boston-based Schooner Capital, where she met Cristina Fernandez-Haegg. Over the next five years, the two women amassed an exceptional performance record before departing Schooner to found C Squared Capital together.

In addition to her husband and children, Christina is survived by her mother, Esther del Pino of Glen Rock, New Jersey; her brother Lincoln, of London, England; her sister Marianne, of New York City; and her step-mother Elibet Benet, of Buenos Aires, Argentina.

A funeral mass for Christina will be celebrated in St. John the Evangelist Church, 9 Glen Road, Wellesley, at 10:00 AM Tuesday June 20th. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Visiting hours at the George F. Doherty & Sons Funeral Home, 477 Washington Street (Rt.16) in Wellesley, will be Monday, June 19th, 5-9:00 PM. Expressions of sympathy may be made in Christina’s honor to the Steppingstone Foundation, 155 Federal Street, Suite 800, Boston, MA 02110.
