Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our beloved father, Ransford Bitter. He lived a full and meaningful life of 90 years. He passed away peacefully of natural causes on 29 May 2023 in Worcester, Massachusetts.

Ransford was a devoted and caring father who touched the lives of so many. He was a pillar of strength, a source of comfort, love, and unbounded generosity towards his friends and family. He was a proud, doting grandfather, and an uncle who saw his nieces and nephews as extensions of his own.

Born on the island of Jamaica in 1932, Ransford grew up instilled with the best of island values: a strong work ethic and commitment to family. From an early age he assumed the role of caregiver to his eight younger siblings; a role that would shape his life for the rest of his days. In 1957 he was married to Eileen Evadney Martin; together they raised a family of 11 children, until her untimely passing in 2011.

Ransford began his professional career in earnest at the renowned Jamaica Shoe Company by the Hanna family. After only a few years, he became the Creative Director for the company; a position that would take him to many corners of the world and would transform an ambitious young scout into a seasoned professional with growing aspirations. He quickly rose through the ranks to the managerial echelon where he honed his leadership skills and his acumen for all aspects of the business. It wasn't long before smoldering embers within him would burst into ardent flames as he ventured into the brutal world of entrepreneurship. He created his own business as a shoe manufacturer, "Ranny B Footwear", daring to dip his toes in the industry's most competitive sector, women's footwear. He was a gallant competitor, who successfully grew his business to eventually take on the mighty Hanna enterprise. He sheparded his employees through the roughest of times, but lavishly shared in the bounty when the tides were high. During his tenure, he mentored and gave opportunities to countless youngsters, encouraging them to start their own businesses. His family enjoyed the fruits of his labor, and he took personal pride and satisfaction in providing them.

After decades of hard work, Ransford left the rigors of the business world; he took the opportunity to immigrate to the United States in 1995. At his advancing age, the transition to a new culture, climate, and lifestyle was not easy. He was beset by insidious illness that took a toll on him. He borrowed from the tremendous reserves of generosity and goodwill that he accrued throughout his life. With the support of family, and especially the considerable sacrifice of his baby sister Joan, his circumstances were buoyed for years until he transitioned into assisted living in Massachusetts.

Ransford will be deeply missed by all who knew him. We take comfort in knowing that his legacy of love, kindness, and compassion will live on through the many lives he touched. Those who loved him continue to be inspired by the example he set as a provider. We will honor his legacy by living a life inspired by him.

Ransford, son of deceased Vincent & Beryl Bitter, widower of Eileen Evadney Bitter, is survived by daughters Angela, Grace, Faith, Althea, Carol, and Michelle; sons Ransford Jr (Danny), Elvis, Desmond, Paul, Peter, and Michael; brother Renex; sisters Yvonne, Voldie, Marleen, Joan; life partner Joyce. He is also survived by countless nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.

May he rest in peace.
