Obituary

Donald R. Acone of Winthrop passed away quietly on May 1, 2023, following a brief illness. He was a proud octogenarian of 86 years old. Donald was the beloved husband of Brenda M. (Treanor) Acone, married for 63 years. Born in Winthrop, where he resided his entire life, he was the cherished son of the late Ralph and Mary (Cox) Acone.

Prior to his retirement, Donald was employed by the Electronics Corporation of America as a Production Planner and was a pioneer during the early days of computer engineering. He received an associate degree from Northeast University while working two jobs and raising a family. Donald served in the Air National Guard and Reserves for 43 years at Otis Air Force Base and was activated during the Berlin Wall Crisis from 1961-1962 serving in Europe. He retired at the rank of Master Sergeant with full military honors.

Donald was the devoted father of Dr. Kevin H. Acone, DMD of South Burlington VT. He was the dear brother of the late Robert and Tootie Acone, Ralph and Helen Acone, Renzo and Judy Acone, Leo and Anna Acone, Walter and Ginny Acone, Iris and Arthur Vachon and Carmen and Robert Gradozzi. Donald was the brother-in-law of Maureen Treanor, Kathleen and George Kinahan and the late Hugh Treanor. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.

Don was a true Son of Winthrop, and never more happy than when he was on the ocean sailing or simply sitting on the beach watching the planes landing at Logan. His love of walking brought him in touch with many around the town who would lovingly refer to him as the “Mayor of Winthrop.” He loved history, sports and was always ready for a lively discussion over a cup of coffee on almost any topic imaginable. His energy and presence around town will truly be missed.

A Funeral Mass will be held in St. John the Evangelist Church (St. Michael’s Parish) 320 Winthrop St. Winthrop, MA on Monday, May 8, at 10AM. Relatives and friends are invited. Please go directly to church. Interment will follow in Winthrop Cemetery.
