Obituary

Mark C. Flannery, age 72, a longtime resident of Winchester, passed away unexpectedly at his job site on April 25, 2023. He was the beloved husband of Merrilee R. Flannery and the devoted father to Kevin P. Flannery.

Born in Pennsylvania, Mark was the son of the late John J. and Dolores A. Flannery. He was raised and educated in Chester, PA, and graduated from St. James Catholic High School in Chester.

Mark attended Penn State University, where he studied Landscape Architecture and eventually moved to Cambridge, MA for a job opportunity.

Signs of Mark’s presence are found all over Boston and the surrounding areas and in his families’ homes. He looked at nature as a gift to be photographed and shared. His creative instincts designed the Monument for the running of the 100th year of the Boston Marathon in Copley Square. You are “encircled” at your feet with the names of the 100 winning runners and the course they followed with four pillars representing the diversity of the runners.
He was an aerial photographer known for his photos of Fenway Park, numerous large business buildings all over Boston, and he worked on multiple jobs for John Morioridy Construction. Using his Landscape Architect experience he developed traffic paths and a monument for Porter Square in Somerville.

Amidst all these creative gifts, Mark found time to reach out in the community in any way he could and share his many talents with others freely, not expecting anything in return. Many in the town call him a “one- of-a-kind” man.

Mark was a very faithful and devout man who loved the Lord. Every Sunday at 8:30 AM he could be found at St Mary’s Church in Winchester. He created beautiful photos of their stained glass windows and shared them with so many as gifts.

In his family, Mark was known as a “great communicator”, always checking up on his brothers and sister who did not live locally. If he didn’t hear from them within the last month he would either call, text, e-mail or send something in the mail. He was the one at every family occasion with a bright smile on his face and a camera in hand to capture family/friends memories. He is sorely being so missed by us all.

Mark loved and treasured his wife Merrilee, his son, Kevin, and his beloved dog Buddy. His family meant the world to him and everything he did was out of love for them. He loved his work as a photographer and he passed away while doing what he loved.
We Love you Mark … Be at Peace with the Lord!

In addition to his wife, Merrilee and son, Kevin P. Flannery, of Winchester, he also leaves behind five siblings: John Flannery and his wife Marilyn, Michael Flannery and his wife Beverly, Bill Flannery and his wife Christina, Timothy Flannery and his wife Barbara, Linda (Flannery) Galinski and her husband Terry, several nieces, nephews and in-laws.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to gather at Costello Funeral Home, 177 Washington St., Winchester, on Saturday, May 6 from 10AM-11:30AM.
