Obituary

Alfred “Al” L. Swain, 82, of Milford, NH died Thursday, June 8, 2006 at the Catholic Medical Center in Manchester, NH. Mr. Swain was born in Melrose, MA on April 7, 1924, a son of the late Alfred E. and Mabel (Fraughton) Swain. He was a resident of Londonderry for 41 years, and had formerly lived in Derry, NH. Mr. Swain owned and operated Al Swain and Company Lumber Processing in Londonderry for 25 years. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Era and a life member of the American Legion Lester Chase Post #9 in Derry. During the 1970’s he was very involved with the Space Town Cadets Drum and Bugle Corps in Derry. Mr. Swain was an avid ballroom dancer. He was also widely known for his trademark saying “Not bad for an old guy.”
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Dorothy R. (Noval) Swain of Milford, two sons, Scott Swain and his wife Shelly of Strafford, NH, Robert Swain and his wife Natalia of Miramar, FL, two daughters, Laurie Nastasia and her husband Frank of Lowell, MA, Susan Cinquegrana and her husband Mark of Newtown, CT, eight grandchildren, Gary, Kristy, Maria, Mark, Kenny, Kristen, Sarah, Shannon, one great grandchild, Jonathan, two brothers, his twin Albert Swain of Nottingham, NH, Earl Swain of North Hampton, NH and also by several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by an infant daughter, Patricia, a son, Kenneth Swain in 1978 and a sister, Medora Plimpton.
Following cremation a memorial service was held at 1:00pm Tuesday, June 13, 2006 in the Peabody Funeral Homes and Crematorium, 290 Mammoth Road, Londonderry. The burial followed in Forest Hill Cemetery, Derry. The family greeted friends and relatives from 12:00 noon Tuesday until the 1:00pm service in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, 66 Hanover St., Suite 101, Manchester, NH 03101.
