Obituary

Alfred Groccia, Sr., 98, just three weeks shy of his 99th birthday, of Putnam Pike, Smithfield, died Sunday, April 16, 2023 at the Village at Waterman Lake. He was the husband of Marie R. (Manco) Groccia. They had been married for 70 years.

Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Natale and Concetta (Nigri) Groccia. He and Marie lived in Smithfield for 37 years, after raising their family in Providence.

Al served during WWII in the Army Air Corps. A skilled craftsman in metal fabrication, he owned and operated an industrial ventilation company Air Control Inc. before retiring in 1987.

Al was a longtime member and past President of the Smithfield Lions Club, a charter member and Bocce coordinator at the Smithfield Senior Center, a former Commissioner for the Smithfield Housing Authority, and a former Commissioner of the Gemini Housing Authority.

Besides his wife, he is survived by his children: Donna Groccia-Lubik of Torrington, CT, Cheryl Suglia and her husband, Robert of North Kingstown and Alfred Groccia, Jr. and his wife, Ann of Wellesley, MA, his grandchildren: Philip Lubik and his wife, Kati Miller, Christopher Lubik, Elena Suglia and her husband, Colin Fagan, Ling Groccia and Chan Groccia. He is predeceased by his siblings: Michael Groccia, John Groccia, Mary Rossi, Rose Sturiale, Margaret Groccia, Louis Groccia and his twin brother, Armando Groccia.

Al had a big personality, was extremely strong-willed, and valued family above all. He had a great appreciation for Italian food especially home cooking. He was a caring husband, father, and grandfather.

His funeral will be held Monday, April 24th at 10:30am from the Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Rt 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville. Mass of Christian Burial will be in St. Thomas Church, Fruit Hill Avenue, Providence at 11am. Visitation will be Monday from 9-10:30am. Burial with military honors will follow in Highland Memorial Park, Johnston.
