Obituary

John T. (Jack) Honan, 67, passed away on April 17th at his home with his family.

The son of the late Daniel E. and Elizabeth M. (Higgins) Honan, Jack was born in Boston on October 31, 1955. He was a lifelong resident of Winthrop where he attended St. John’s Elementary school. He graduated from Dom Savio High School in 1974.

Jack was the beloved husband of the late Catheryn M. (Driscoll) Honan. He is survived by his brothers and sisters-in-law, Daniel J. and Stephanie Honan, Robert C. Honan, Thomas P. and Julie Ann Honan, and his adored nieces, Katie and Mary Honan. He was proud to be the grandson of the late Massachusetts legislator, Representative Daniel J. Honan (1934-1938). Jack is also survived by many dear cousins and a million wonderful friends.

Jack knew and loved every inch of the Town of Winthrop, Boston Harbor, and the Harbor Islands. Over the years, he spent many carefree hours navigating the local waterways in his boat, “Riders on the Storm”. Jack always took the boat out on Halloween for a birthday cruise.

He loved street hockey and ice hockey and he was a die-hard Bruins fan. In his younger days, Jack skated for the local Stallions hockey team where he played defense with a lot of heart.

Jack had worked for the Massachusetts Port Authority for 17 years. At the time of his retirement, he had been employed by Northwest Airlines. He was a Life Member of the Winthrop Lodge of Elks # 1078 and a member of the Winthrop Improvement & Historical Association (WIHA).

Jack was interested in history, especially as it pertained to World War II. He was very knowledgeable about the battles, leadership, and the equipment used in the war and he was thrilled to have met many of its heroes.

The Honan Family would like to express our appreciation to Laurie McFarland and to Irene from Care Dimensions for their support during Jack’s illness. We would also like to thank our own Julie Honan for being Jack’s angel.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Jack’s name may be made to the Elks or to WIHA.

The Maurice W. Kirby Funeral Home is assisting the Honan family with Jack’s arrangements.
