Obituary

EAST LONGMEADOW - Shirley A. (Asselta) McMahon, 85, of East Longmeadow, was Called Safely Home on Friday, April 14, 2023. She passed into Eternal Life at River Mills Assisted Living at Chicopee Falls surrounded by all the memories that she loved and cherished. She was born in Worcester on May 16, 1937, a beloved daughter of the late Joseph M. Asselta and Alice (Langevin) Swank. She was raised in Shrewsbury, graduated from Worcester Trade High School and moved to Springfield in 1961 where she lived until moving to East Longmeadow in 2019. She was employed as a waitress for many years and had worked at Valle Steak House in Springfield, the Schine Inn in Chicopee, Jack August in Springfield and the Hu Ke Lau Restaurant in Longmeadow. During her leisure time, she enjoyed spending time trying her luck at local bingo games and the casinos and playing pokeno. Above all, she loved spending time with her family and her many friends. She was predeceased by her beloved husband and best friend, William F. McMahon. They were married on June 20, 1959 in Shrewsbury and were blessed with over 55 years of happiness together. She leaves her three loving children, Donna M. Brown of West Springfield, Cynthia L. Sears and her husband, Michael, of Chicopee and William J. McMahon and his wife, Brenda, of East Longmeadow; her five cherished grandchildren, Jheremy Brown and his wife, Caitlin, of West Springfield, Danielle Pursey and her husband, Samuel, of Monson, Alexandria McMahon and her partner, Ryan Skowron, of East Longmeadow, Nicolas Brosseau of East Longmeadow and his partner, Charlotte MacKinnon of Boston and Madison McMahon of East Longmeadow; her two cherished great grandsons, Finnegan Brown and Hudson Pursey; her dear sister, Susan Cruze and her husband, James, of Orlando, FL; her three dear sisters in law, Kirsten Asselta of Orlando, FL, Rose McMahon of Enfield, CT and Carol McMahon of Woonsocket, RI; her dear brother in law, Robert McMahon of Bensalem, PA; and her many dear nephews, nieces, extended family members and friends. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her dear brother, Joseph Asselta. Her family will receive friends on Thursday, April 27, 2023 from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life Service at 9:30 a.m. at the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.). Her Committal Service will follow the Celebration Service at 11 a.m. in the Chapel at the Massachusetts Veterans' Memorial Cemetery, 1390 Main Street, Agawam, MA 01001.
