Salem
Jeanne Stella, 83, of Salem, passed away on Saturday, April 8, 2023 at the Kaplan Family Hospice House in Danvers. She was the daughter of the late Herbert S. and Eva Jean Spieckerman.
Born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio Jean lived most of her life in Salem. For many years Jeanne taught first grade at the Saltonstall School, where she also ran a chess club, which became well-known on the North Shore. In her younger years, she enjoyed entering her terrariums in flower shows across the state.
Following her retirement, Jeanne devoted much of her time to the Friends of Salem Woods, of which she was a charter member. She was particularly interested in the history of local cemeteries and Salem streets, most notably the origins of their names. Jeanne was very proud of her most recent book, Historic Streets of Salem, Massachusetts (The History Press, American Chronicles 2020). She also authored many articles on historic Salem for the Salem News.
Jeanne was a member of many of many societies and organizations including; Daughters of the American Revolution, Col. Timothy Pickering Chapter; National Society of the Colonial Dames of the Seventeenth Century, Gov. John Endecott Chapter; National Society of Old Plymouth Colony Descendants; National Society Sons and Daughters of the Pilgrims; National Society Descendants of Early Quakers; Daughters of Union Veterans of the Civil War; Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic; Daughters of the First Settlers of Newbury, MA, First Families of Ohio; Sheldon Family Association; and the Townsend Society of America. She was also a member of Delta Omicron and Phi Theta Kappa, as well as Massachusetts State Poetry Society; Historic Salem, Inc. and the Peabody Essex Museum.
Jeanne is survived by her brother, Stephen E. Spieckerman of Waukesha, Wisconsin.
