Obituary

Eugene Sullivan passed away on Wednesday, March 22, 2023.

A kind and gentle man, he was deeply devoted to his
wife of 62 years, Carol Sullivan, his family, church, and community.  He leaves Carol, his children
Michael (Martha), Brian (Laurie), and Maryellen who passed away in January, and grandchildren
Emma, Kate, Kevin, and Eric. We will all miss his patience, abundant love, and his keen sense of
humor.

Gene was born in Worcester on December 28, 1937. He was a proud graduate of the College of
the Holy Cross.  After graduation and marriage, Gene and Carol moved to Virginia where he
served for two years in the U.S. Marines, becoming a captain.  Moving briefly to Springfield and
then settling in East Longmeadow, Gene worked for 36 years at Mass Mutual before retiring. He
believed passionately in volunteering and helped seniors with their taxes and insurance and as
an advocate in the foster care system.

A committed parent, Gene took a very active role in raising his children, spending countless
hours coaching baseball and basketball teams. An avid sports enthusiast and lifelong Red Sox
and Celtics fan, he played softball, basketball, tennis, and racquetball. And nothing made him
happier in later years than golfing with his sons and grandsons.

Gene loved long early morning strolls on the National Seashore or in the woods with a family
dog. A true intellect, he enjoyed reading particularly about history and current affairs and could
answer any question we threw at him - and Papa always had time to read to his grandkids.
Adored by all four, there were frequent soccer or whiffle ball games in the backyard, shared
video games, and outings where Papa was known to steal a French fry or two. Curious and
interested, he enjoyed a good chat and listened and held on to every detail.  Teasing might
have been involved. We will forever miss the twinkle in his gentle blue eyes.

A funeral mass will be held on Saturday, April 1, 2023, at 10:30 am at St. Joseph’s Church in Charlton. The J.HENRI MORIN & SON FUNERAL HOME, 23 Maple Terr., Spencer is assisting the family with arrangements.
