John Edward Greenhalgh, 79, of 21 Wolf Neck Road, Old Mystic, passed away Monday, June 5, 2006 at the L & M Hospital after a lengthy illness.
Born December 19, 1926 in Mystic, he was the son of John W. and Mary Richards Greenhalgh. He enlisted in the US Navy Air Corps in 1944 serving during World War II.
After his service he was employed at the Naval Underwater Sound Lab in New London as a Mechanical Engineering Technician until his retirement in 1984. An extremely resourceful and inventive individual, Mr. Greenhalgh received numerous awards and citations from the GOV for his technical contributions to the Naval Underwater Sound Lab. Mr. Greenhalgh was an accomplished model maker and model train enthusiast.
He was a charter member of the Mystic River Historical Society and a member of the Westerly-Pawcatuck Antique Auto Club.
Extremely proud of his full restored M38-A1 Army jeep, Mr. Greenhalgh can be remembered as having the privilege of driving our local veterans in his jeep in the Mystic Memorial Day Parade for the past 30years.
He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Kathleen M. Sylvia Greenhalgh; their three sons, William J. Greenhalgh and his wife Marcia of Noank, Barry E. Greenhalgh and his wife Susan of Pawcatuck, and Bruce M. Greenhalgh and his wife Janna of Westerly; 9 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren; a sister, Margaret Reed of W. Palm Beach, Fla, several nieces and nephews.
A Funeral Service will be conducted at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl Street, Historic downtown Mystic on Friday at 10am. Burial will follow at St. Patrick Cemetery, Old Mystic. There are no visiting hours. Donations in his memory may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
