Obituary

SPRINGFIELD - Susan M. “Susie” (Heffernan) Carey, 68, of the Hungry Hill section of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Thursday, March 9, 2023. She passed into Eternal Life at home surrounded by the love of her family. She was born in Springfield on March 6, 1955, adored daughter of the late James K. Heffernan, Jr. and Isabel A. "Babe" (Battles) Heffernan. She was born and raised in Springfield, graduating from the High School of Commerce in Springfield. As an adult, she followed her dream of becoming a nurse, completing her studies while raising four children and ultimately received her Bachelor's Degree in Nursing from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. She was an impassioned nurse, her favorite placement being the school nurse at the Lincoln Elementary School on Chestnut Street in Springfield. She loved children and was honored to care for them. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church in Springfield, with a deep love for God. During her leisure time, she enjoyed baking, sewing and most recently bird watching. Susan loved planting, animals, was a Girl Scout Leader for many years and was most especially known to be a loving “Grammie” to her precious grandchildren. Above all, she cherished spending time with her family and her many friends. She leaves her beloved husband and best friend, William T. Carey. They were married at Sacred Heart Church in Springfield on June 15, 1974 and were blessed with over 49 years of happiness together. She also leaves her four loving children, Maryellen Myers and her husband, Jason, of Clay, NY, Patrick J. Carey of Cromwell, CT, Liam M. Carey and his wife, Candise, of Aberdeen, MD and Timothy J. Carey and his wife, Samantha, of East Longmeadow; her nine cherished grandchildren, Bryn and Anna Myers, Kayla and Katherine Carey, Isabella, Guineveve, and River Carey and Nicholas Bradley and Lily Carey; her five siblings, Patricia A. Carlin and her husband, Timothy, of East Longmeadow, Mary E. O’Brien and her husband, George, of Springfield, Geraldine A. Elias of Agawam, James K. Heffernan III of Springfield and Timothy J. Heffernan and his wife, Denise, of Springfield; her four brothers in law and sisters in law, Kevin Carey and his wife, Catherine, of Leeds, ME, Regina Ferris and her husband, Thomas, of Glastonbury, CT, John Burnham of Portsmouth, NH and Patrick Carey and his wife, Jacqueline, of Kingwood, TX; and her many nephews, nieces, cousins, extended family members and numerous friends including her close friend, Jennie Santiago. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother in law, Antoine Elias; and her two treasured sisters in law, Catherine Carey and Helen Burnham. Her Funeral will be held on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 beginning at the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Springfield, Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Church, 395 Chestnut Street, Springfield, MA 01104. Her Burial will follow the Mass at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, 421 Tinkham Road, Springfield, MA 01129. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Monday, March 20, 2023 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Her family requests that memorial donations be made in her memory to Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 Saint Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
