Verner “Joe” Fitts, 78, of 59 Woodland Ave. died August 10, 2002 in Lakes Region General Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was born in Laconia on August 17, 1923, the son of Samuel and Emelia (Begin) Fitts Sr. and was a lifelong resident of the city.
Prior to his retirement he was employed as the foreman for the carpentry shop at the Laconia State School & Training Center. He continued to work at the shop on a part-time basis following his retirement. He served in the Army during World War II.
Family members include his wife of 60 years, Elsie (Brown) Fitts of Laconia; a daughter, Yvonne L. Barker of Laconia; two sons, Vern R. Fitts Jr. of Jacksonville, FL and David W. Fitts of Oakdale CT; three grandchildren, Jennifer Fitts of Norwich CT, Michael Freeman and Jonn Freeman, both of Laconia; two great grandchildren, Brittany Freeman and Ciarra Freeman, both of Laconia; a sister, Alice Kelly of Laconia; seven brothers, Warren Fitts of Babylon NY, Ernest Fitts of Belmont NH, Robert Fitts of Jefferson NH, Merrill Fitts of Belmont, Armand Fitts of Gilford, Donald Fitts of Sanbornton NH and Philip Fitts of Belmont NH; nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be in the Simoneau & Lambert Funeral Home, 139 Church St. Laconia on Monday from 7 to 9 PM. A Funeral Ceremony will be held in the funeral home on Tuesday at 11 AM. Cremation will follow. Memorial donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association, NH Affiliate, 249 Canal St. Manchester NH 03101
