Obituary

AUBURN-Florence M. (McCarthy) Callan, 89, formerly of Arlington St. died Sat., June 3 at Holy Trinity Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Her husband, William V. Callan died in 2002. She leaves a daughter, Patricia and her husband Dr. James L. Garvey of Marco Island, FL and her son, Robert B. and his wife Karen (Jacobson) Callan of Shrewsbury; five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

She was born in Worcester the daughter of Jeremiah and Josephine (Bradshaw) McCarthy and graduated from St. Peter’s High School. Florence worked in the office at O’Coin’s Furniture for 22 years. She was the oldest living patient as one of the pioneers in heart surgery. Dr. Dwight E. Harken performed her surgery in the early 1950’s at the former Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston. She was one of the founding members of North American Martyrs Church.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, June 6 at 12:00 PM at North American Martyrs Church, 8 Wyoma Dr. Burial will follow in St. John’s Cemetery. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Harken Fund Award at Mount Auburn Hospital, Developmental Office, 300 Mt. Auburn St., Cambridge, MA 02138.
