Obituary

Provicetown, MA -- Roger A. Chauvette, 80, died February 3, 2023, at Seashore Pointe Wellness and Rehabilitation Center in Provincetown.

He was born in Manchester, NH on October 18, 1942, the son of Emile and Georgette (Dionne) Chauvette. At the age of 13, Roger entered the La Salette Seminary and went on to be ordained a Catholic Priest. He earned Bachelor degrees in Theology and Philosophy from the University of Ottawa and a Master’s degree in Communications from Boston University.

During his ministry, Roger created Mark IV Presentations which produced multimedia programs for religious education. He traveled around the country and the world preaching parish retreats and missions. He also was the pastor of churches in Johnson, Eden, and Hyde Park, Vermont.

After leaving the La Salette community in 1998, Roger worked as a reporter and editor for Provincetown Magazine. For several years, he owned and operated Chauvet Fine Collectibles. Roger was on many town committees, including the rebuilding of MacMillan Pier, the Bicycle Committee, the AIDS Support Group, Provincetown Poetry Festival, and the Provincetown Theater Company. He was proud of having coordinated the Carnival Parade eight times, as well as the centennial parade for the Pilgrim Monument.

Most of all, Roger was a writer, playwright, and poet. He wrote and published two books including A Pilgrim Adrift in the Dunes and Critters of the Sea. Although never published, he also wrote his memoir to document the times in which he grew up. He loved genealogy and documented thousands of relatives for the Chauvette and Dionne families.

Roger had an outgoing personality and would strike up a conversation with anyone. He knew most of the locals in Provincetown and gave freely of his time to listen and counsel anyone who sought him out. Despite leaving the La Salette Community, he never stopped practicing the ministry of reconciliation that he was ordained to provide.

Roger was predeceased by his parents, Emile and Georgette as well as his brothers Larry and Jerry. Family members include his brothers Normand Chauvette and his wife Tina of Goffstown, David Chauvette and his wife Susan of Manchester, NH and Jude Chauvette and his husband Rick Hale of Galax, VA, sisters-in-law Nancy Chauvette of Woodlawn, VA and Karen Chauvette of Goffstown NH, He has 10 nieces and nephews as well as several great nephews and nieces.

Services: There will not be any calling hours. A memorial celebration will be held at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Provincetown on Friday, February 10 at 2 PM.
