Jan D. Harbutiak, 82

Dateline: Mansfield, MA

Jan D. Harbutiak, age 82, of Mansfield, passed peacefully, surrounded by his loving family on Friday, February 3, 2023 at Sturdy Memorial Hospital in Attleboro. He was the beloved husband of Teresa M. Murphy, to whom he was wed for nearly thirty-five years.

Born in Ambridge, PA on August 9, 1940, he was a loving son of the late John and Eleanor (Cioroch) Harbutiak.

Jan grew up in Ambridge, PA and was a 1958 graduate of Ambridge High School. During the time of the Vietnam Era, he proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army.

Jan spent most of his adult life living in Washington and California and had made his home in Mansfield for the past twenty years. Prior to retiring, He was an owner of the Gazelle Bus Company in Seattle and previously drove for Greyhound Bus.

After Jan and Teresa moved from Seattle to Teresa’s hometown of Mansfield, he joined the Narragansett Bay Wheelmen Club. There he discovered a passion for cycling and the fellowship of the cycling community. Jan’s family and friends were the essence of his life and since residing in Mansfield, was a parishioner of Saint Mary’s Church in Mansfield.

In addition to his beloved wife, he was the much-loved brother-in-law of Richard J. Murphy and his partner Carole Cupp of PA, Stephen V. Murphy of Attleboro and the late Joseph F. Murphy, Jr., who is survived by his wife Suzanne Murphy of Franklin, Charles E. Murphy and Barbara A. Stratton. He was the dear brother of Tena Bateman and her husband Warren of Half Moon Bay, CA and the late Nancy Kitzmiller. He was the proud Godfather of niece Hope Murphy and grand-nephew Wade Murphy Dublanica. He was the cherished uncle of Susan Morneault and her husband Ben, Daniel Murphy and his wife Tracee, Deborah Stratton, Rebecca Murphy and her husband Keith Polis, Katherine Stratton and her fiancé James Davis, Judi Murphy and her wife Heidi Blake, Jessica Zibell and her husband Michael, Rachel Murphy, John Murphy and his wife Damaris, Thomas Murphy and his wife Jenny, Matthew Murphy, Hill Bateman and his wife Randi, Riley Bateman and his wife Gabriella, Kayla Witherspoon and her wife Gwenn. He was the treasured great uncle of Megan, Alex, Zack, Christina, Hilary, Parker, Christopher, Adeline, Mae, Joey, Liam, Nolan, Trinity, Ryan, Gideon, Sam, James, Camilla, Victoria, and Emilia. He is also survived by his best lifelong friend George Furness and his wife Mary of Gresham, Oregon.

Relatives and friends are cordially invited to attend visiting hours on Friday, February 10th from 4:00-8:00 P.M. at the Sherman & Jackson Funeral Home, 55 North Main Street, Mansfield.

His Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 11th at 11:00 A.M. in Saint Mary’s Church, 330 Pratt Street (Route 106) Mansfield. Burial will follow at Saint Mary’s Cemetery in Mansfield.
