Well Known Attorney

Attorney Robert F. Murphy, Jr., 78, a lifelong Lowell resident, passed away Tuesday, January 24, 2023, at Lowell General Hospital after a brief illness.

A son of the late Robert F. Murphy and the late Marcella (Hurley) Murphy, he was born August 10, 1944, in Lowell and grew up and was educated in the City attending St. Patrick’s Grammar School graduating in 1958, and Keith Academy graduating in 1962. He went on to attend George Washington University attaining a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1966, and a Doctor of Juris Prudence Degree in 1969 from Catholic University.

After Law School, he worked for the Law Office of John E. Leggat as a long term associate focusing primarily on real estate passings, estates, wills, and trusts. In 2004, he went into solo practice, where he focused on child and family welfare law out of the Lowell Juvenile Court in addition to continuing to handle other general legal issues. Throughout his many years of administering Law, he earned the respect, trust, and admiration of many of the areas Legal and Judicial members.  

Robert enjoyed his professional career, but he also loved to focus on charitable organizations. He was a longtime member of the Merrimack Valley Catholic Charities Advisory Board and was on the Board of Directors of various local charities including Goodwill, Lowell Association for the Blind, Lowell Association for Retarded Children, and was also involved with the Community Table of Lowell. In addition, he was a longtime member of the Greater Lowell Bar Association, as well as a trustee of the Blanche Walsh Charity Trust.

He made his home in the Belvedere Section of the City, where he could be seen driving his yellow roadster. He was a member of the former St. Joseph’s Lithuanian Church and a communicant of the Holy Trinity Polish Church.

His survivors include his brother, Jonathan E Murphy and his wife, Jean, of Rye, NH; his niece, Kerry E. Murphy and her partner, Lisa Chu, of Atkinson, NH; his nephew, Jonathan (Jay) E. Murphy Jr. and his wife, Annalisa, of Studio City, CA; his grand niece and nephews, Campbell, Clara, and Maxwell Robert Murphy; along with his many legal associates and friends.

He was also predeceased by his sister, Marcella K.  Murphy.

You are invited to his calling hours from 3 until 6 p.m. on Monday, January 30, 2023.  

On Tuesday morning, his funeral will begin at 10 a.m. at the MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 HIGHLAND STREET, LOWELL 978-458-6816. 

His Funeral Mass will be offered at IMMACULATE CONCEPTION CHURCH, 144 East Merrimack Street, Lowell, at 11 a.m.. Burial in St. Patrick Cemetery.
