Former New England Telephone Secretary


TEWKSBURY: Claire A. (Downey) Cronin, age 76, a resident of Tewksbury for over 50 years, formally of Stoneham, passed away at the Lahey Clinic Medical Center on Wednesday, January 18, 2023 surrounded by family and friends.

She was the beloved wife of David J. Cronin, Sr. with whom she celebrated 55 years marriage on April 8th.

Born in Boston on January 27, 1946, she was the daughter of the late Daniel Downey and the late Margaret (Leahy) Downey.

Claire was raised in the Dorchester area of Boston, attended local schools, and graduated from Jeremiah Burke High School.

Claire worked as a secretary for New England Telephone, United Liquors in Wilmington, and Moore Staffing Services in Methuen until her retirement.

She and her husband enjoyed vacationing in Alaska, Hawaii, and the Caribbean. In addition, she enjoyed the simple pleasures of completing puzzles, attending craft fairs, Celtic Women concerts and watching the snow fall from her window.

Besides her husband, she is survived by two children, Karen M. Cronin, of Tewksbury, and David J. Cronin and his wife Mihaela, of Tewksbury. She was the sister of Daniel Downey and his wife Christine, of Plymouth and the late John Downey and his surviving wife Roberta, of Canton. Aunt to many nieces and nephews.

Calling hours for Claire are Monday morning, January 30th, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee Street, Tewksbury, immediately followed by services to be held at the funeral home. Services will conclude with interment at St. Mary Cemetery, 90 River Road, Tewksbury. In lieu of flowers, online donations in her memory may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, at www.alz.org or by mail to the Alzheimer’s Association, 309 Waverley Oaks Road, Waltham, MA 02452. At the request of the Cronin family, masks are requested for those attending.
