Obituary

Scott Douglas Campbell, devoted husband, father, brother, colleague, and friend, passed away peacefully after a brave and prolonged battle with pancreatic cancer on January 20th, 2023, surrounded by his family. He is survived by his loving wife Naira, daughter Anahit, son John, siblings Ruth, Rich (Nancy), and Karen (Mike), and parents-in-law Marina and Sergey.

Scott was born in the suburbs of Chicago on July 3rd, 1962. He loved celebrating life by traveling, fishing, hiking, reading, and grilling for his family. He earned his BS and MS degrees in civil engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign and his PhD in structural engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, later becoming one of the leading experts in his field.

Scott started his career as a professor at the American University of Armenia (AUA), in Yerevan, Armenia, at the frontiers when the institution was starting. AUA became a place where Scott met Naira - his wife, lifelong friend, and collaborator. Scott was always passionate about the students and was one of the favorite faculty members at every institution where he had worked.

As a person, Scott was genuinely a selfless, kind, supportive, and incredibly intelligent individual. There wasn’t a trivia question he couldn’t get right, even up to the day of his passing. His kids sought him for advice often, and he and his wife were lucky to collaborate on intellectual projects together.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American University of Armenia Corporation (AUAC) for the establishment of the Dr. Scott Campbell Scholarship Fund at the American University of Armenia (AUA). AUAC is recognized as a 501(c)(3) organization by the Internal Revenue Services and donations are considered to be tax deductible (Federal ID #: 94-3140704).
