Jean R Chin née MarTang , a resident of Somerville , passed away suddenly on Thursday January 12 , 2023 at Massachusetts General Hospital. She was 80 years old.
Jean was born in Trinidad, West Indies, to the late James and MeeLan MarTang and was one of 7 children. She was the first in her family to gain an academic scholarship to attend the local parochial school, which was followed by a brief teaching career there. She declined her acceptance to the University of New Brunswick, Canada by emigrating to the US to achieve the American dream. Jean was also very instrumental in sponsoring many of her siblings to allow them to gain access to America in pursuit of a better life.
Jean was the beloved wife of Ted Chin, to whom she was married to for 53 years. Jean's sister Joyce and her brothers Wellington and Victor predeceased her and she is survived by her brothers Kelvin and Jackson and her sister Elsie, as well as many loving nephews and nieces.
In her free time, Jean and Ted enjoyed traveling on vacation around the US and Canada and visiting family members outside Boston.
Jean's burial will be at Forest Hills Cemetery at which Rev. Greg Johnston will conduct a private service for family only.
