Obituary

Walter W. McKay, age 91 of North Attleboro, passed away January 15, 2023. Born and raised in Canton, MA he attended St. John the Evangelist School in Canton (1945) and Canton High School (1949). In 1951, he enlisted in the Navy entering Boot Camp at the Newport Naval Base. He served on the naval destroyer USS Gatling during the Korean War and was honorably discharged on March 25, 1955. Upon Discharge, Walter enrolled at Northeastern University on the GI Bill and received his bachelor’s degree in engineering. He continued his education at Babson College in pursuit of an MBA. He was an Electrical Engineer for Raytheon Corp, Northrop Corp, Orion Research Inc., Texas Instruments, ACS Industries, Foxboro Company, Prime Computer Inc. and Perception Technology.
Walter enjoyed boating and golfing at his home on Lake Ossipee in NH. As his family grew, he was increasingly beguiled by his grandkids to whom he was fondly referred to as “Grumps”. In his later years, he was known to torture this next generation with technical questions regarding his computer and/or remote control as well as his massive collection of passwords that always seemed to get lost. He will be remembered for the (sometimes tough) love that he shared with his family and his dry wit that stayed with him until his last breath. He did it his way.
Walter was a member of the American Legion in Attleboro, Veterans of Foreign War, USS Gatling (DD 671) Alumni Assn, Tin Can Sailors Assn, Canton Town Club, Canton Historical Society, and the Knights of Columbus.
Father of Tracy McKay Blake and her husband Kevin of Hingham, Michael S. McKay and his wife Darlene of Canton, Kerry M. DiNardo and her husband Douglas of Wrentham, Susan McKay McConville and her husband Joseph of N. Attleboro, Peter C. McKay and his wife Ann of Medfield, and Matthew J. McKay of Westwood. Brother of Lousie Leary of Canton and pre-deceased by Virginia (McKay) Malcolmson. Also survived by 18 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Canton Veteran’s Service Department 801 Washington St. Canton, MA 02021.
