Obituary

Virginia “Ginny” Claire Griffin Wells, 86, of Tifton passed away Friday, January 13, 2023, at Tift Regional Medical Center. Her funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 17, 2023, at Saint Anne’s Episcopal Church in Tifton with the Rev. Leeann Culbreath officiating. Mrs. Wells will be laid to rest at Douglas City Cemetery in Douglas. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, January 17, 2023, in the Parish Hall of Saint Anne’s Episcopal Church in Tifton from 10:00 a.m. until the hour of the service.

David Hilliard, Harry Bowen, Rachel Owen, Chet Summers, Stephen Summers, Chris Hammond, Richard Rose, Jack Sullivan and Earl Denham will serve as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the choir at Saint Anne’s Episcopal Church in Tifton.

Born April 17, 1936, in New Haven, Connecticut, Mrs. Wells was the daughter of the late Burney Edwin Griffin and Alice Lamb Griffin. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William R. “Bill” Wells. Before retiring, she was employed for 17 years as a merchandiser with American Greeting Cards. She was raised in Cheshire, Connecticut and Douglas, Georgia. She graduated from Coffee County High School in 1954 and graduated from Valdosta State College. She was past-president of the Elks #1114 Ladies Auxiliary. She was a former member of Tifton’s First Presbyterian Church, where she sang in the choir. Presently, she was a member of Saint Anne’s Episcopal Church, where she also sang in the choir.

Mrs. Wells is survived by one son, Craig Mark Wells of Tifton; one daughter and son-in-law, Suzanne and Henderson Wise of Anderson, South Carolina; two grandchildren, Whitner Claire Wise of Anderson, South Carolina and Griffin Henderson Wise and his wife Kate of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina; one great-granddaughter, Margaret Griffin Wise; one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Wally and Brenda Summers of Americus; one niece and two nephews.

Flowers will be accepted or memorial gifts may be made to Saint Anne’s Episcopal Church, 2411 Central Avenue, Tifton, GA 31794.
