Obituary

Joseph Piti, 96, of Smithfield, died Tuesday, January 3, 2023 at his home with his family by his side. He was the husband of the late Alice (English) Piti, who died in 1998. They had been married for 49 years at the time of her death.

Born in Sicily, Italy, he was a son of the late Carmelo and Vittoria (Ferlazzo) Piti. He had lived in Smithfield for the past 60 years and had previously lived in Providence. He served in the US Army.

Joe was the owner of Piti Building Company, Inc. for 55 years. His company built many local buildings including St. Philip Church, The Smithfield Police Station and the Smithfield Middle School.

Joe is survived by his children: Kathleen Zange and Bill of Smithfield, Cheryl D’Alessio and Glenn of Smithfield, Debra LaButti and her husband, Chris of Glocester, Richard Piti and his wife, Donna of Smithfield and Gerard Wagner of Johnston, his 14 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, his siblings: Carmela Factor of West Greenwich, Anna Sundstrom of Coventry, and Nicholas Piti of Smithfield. He was the companion of Dolores “Dee” Detri. He was the brother of the late Henry Piti, Josephine Chiodine and Mary Iafrate.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 10am in St. Philip Church, 622 Putnam Pike, Greenville. Burial will follow in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Cranston. Visitation Monday 4-7pm in the Anderson-Winfield Funeral Home, Rt 44 at Greenville Common, Greenville. In lieu of flowers donations in him memory may be made to a charity of your choice.
