Obituary


Clayton P. Stone, Jr. 93, a longtime resident of Abington, died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday December 29 with his loving family by his side. He was the beloved husband of Barbara J. (Ryerson) Stone.

Born in Milton and raised in St. Johnsbury, VT, he was the son of the late Clayton and Eva Stone.

Clayton was a proud Veteran of the United States Air Force having served from 1950-1954.

Before his retirement in 1988, he had worked for over thirty-three years for AT&T becoming a manager. In 1989 he received his real estate broker’s license and later opened “Clayton Stone Realty” in Hingham and had served as president for the Plymouth County Board of Realtors.

He was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of Wessagussett Lodge, Weymouth United Masonic Lodges, and the Satucket Lodge.

As a longtime resident of Abington, Clayton was a loyal member of the First Baptist Church where he was both a Deacon and Moderator and was a member of the Boston Baptist Social Union.

He sang in many local Barbershop Quartets was a member of SPEBSQSA and president of the South Shore Men of Harmony, and was also a member of the Citizen’s Police Academy Alumni. In 2008 he was recognized for his service to the community and was awarded “Abington’s Best”.

He had enjoyed working on British Sports cars and belonged to the Cape Cod British Car Club.

In addition to his wife Barbara, he is survived by his children Carolyn E. Holmes and her husband David of Stoughton, William C. Stone and his wife Gina of Abington and Ronald A. Stone of Fountain Valley, CA, his grandchildren Joshua Holmes, Maxwell Stone and Lucas Holmes. He is also survived by his brother Bruce W. Clifford of VT and his sister Gertrude T. Canning of Weymouth. He was predeceased by his siblings Edith Young and Charles H. Clifford.

Family and friends are invited to attend his visiting hours on Sunday January 1 from 4-7 PM with a service to follow at 7 PM in the Blanchard Funeral Chapel, Plymouth Street (Rte. 58 @ the rotary) Whitman.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, January 14 in the Milton Cemetery, 211 Centre Street, Milton, MA 02186. Guests should arrive in their cars along the road outside the office along Willow Ave. by 9:45 AM. A procession will follow to the gravesite at 10:00 AM.
