Emily E. Ritter, age 89, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2022. Daughter of Virginia and Francis Britt, Emily was born in Northampton, Massachusetts. She lived her childhood in Amherst, Massachusetts. Emily met her husband, James Ritter, at Hobart and William Smith Colleges. They married in 1960 and celebrated their 62nd anniversary this past March. They spent time on both coasts before settling permanently in Greenville, RI in 1970, where they raised their three children. Emily worked for Smithfield Public Schools as a teacher and later a guidance counselor, retiring in 1998. She spent her early retirement volunteering as a docent at the RISD Museum of Art and traveling all over the world. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, gardening, painting, reading, and being a part of her local community. She was a devoted member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Emily will be deeply missed by her family, especially her three children, Juliet, Jennifer, and Eric, her six grandchildren, Faye, Leah, Sophie, Henry, Ian, and Claire, and her siblings Virginia, Dorothy, and John. Most of all she will be missed by her loving husband, James, and dog, Mason. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity.
