Obituary

WEST BALDWIN- Lawrence “Larry” Morrison Mounce of West Baldwin, passed away December 11, 2022, age 92.

On Friday 12/9/22, Larry tried to pass away at home, but the love of his life and wife of 64 years, Wilma - would not allow it, so Dad enjoyed another day with her. On Saturday, he tried again and Mom called 911. Mom brought him back before the ambulance arrived. Although he was alert and in good spirits, he was brought to Maine Medical in Portland where he stayed the night. He said, “I’ll be home tomorrow, don’t cancel playing bridge”. Instead, he made his getaway by passing peacefully on Sunday morning.

His life was full of adventure and he leaves us with many great stories to share. Larry was born July 3, 1930, in Jersey City, New Jersey to parents, Shirley and Louise Mounce. He is predeceased by his sister, Muriel. He spent much of his youth with grandparents in Parsonsfield, Maine. After graduating college from Iowa State University, he went on to serve in the US Air Force as a navigator aboard an RB-26 reconnaissance aircraft in the Korean War. Upon his return he married his wife, Wilma and together they raised sons - Stan, Mark, Scott and daughter, Melanie. His degree in Animal Sciences took him on a career in the fields of Health and Environmental studies working at the FDA and EPA.

His service in Korea was a significant time in his life and influenced his favorite bumper sticker, (I miss Ike! Hell, I even miss Harry). The Baldwin Historical Society honored Larry at the May 2022 Memorial Day ceremony by presenting him with the Quilt of Valor. His navigator training made him a master of maps. His family and friends knew this because he practiced his aptitude for it. While not in the cockpit of an aircraft over enemy territory but rather in the car navigating the twisty winding back roads of his beloved State of Maine.

He was ever so careful and conscious of the best route to travel, the most scenic byway or off the beaten path to places of interest yet keeping a keen eye on the energy efficiency gauge on his hybrid vehicle. He would also go the extra mile to research and write up detailed directions for his kids travels. We have learned not to second guess his navigation skills in this regard or suffer getting lost or pay tolls. He loved to be a travel guide to others, including total strangers who may not know their way.

Always quick with a smile and a handshake that meant it. He adored his wife and liked holding her hand and always wanted to open her car door even when he didn’t notice that she had already gotten out. Mom and Dad enjoyed dancing, bowling, and playing cards. He loved reading on the front porch where the birds knew him and appreciated the food he provided. He liked flowers and planted fake ones outside when he couldn’t get his own to grow. He was humble, kind and gullible to fall for scores of pranks by his kids and grandkids, then turn around and laugh at himself.

We will miss him very much, and as Dad would often signoff, “Enjoy”!

A Celebration of Life will take place in the future.
