Obituary

Mildred (Shafer) Darrow, age 81, of 1342 North Road, Groton, died Thursday at the home of her daughter, Patricia Darrow Arnold of Ledyard with her family by her side.

Mrs. Darrow was born in Mystic on January 14, 1921 the oldest of seven children of Frank and Effie (Whipple) Shafer. She lived in Groton with her husband Arthur for the past 60 years.

Prior to her marriage, she was employed at Sydner’s Mayonnaise and the New London Hospital. During World War II, she worked at Electric Boat.

Millie was an active member of the Old Mystic Baptist Church where she enjoyed volunteering her time. She will also be remembered as a caring mother, and loving grandmother and great-grandmother who took great pride in her family and also enjoyed gardening and crocheting.

Mrs. Darrow leaves her husband, Arthur L. Darrow, her sister and brother-in-law, June and Leroy Darrow, her bothers and sister-in-laws, Vernard and Janet Shafer, Ronald and Madelyn Shafer; a son and daughter-in-law, Arthur and Roseanne Darrow Jr. of Groton; a daughter, Patricia Darrow Arnold of Ledyard, a daughter and son-in law, Sandra and Larry Wynn of Rock Creek, OH, grandsons and grandaughters-in-law, Walter and Lisa Arnold Jr., David and Sandy Arnold, grandaughter and grandson-in-law, Melissa and Robert Irvine, four grandaughters, Robin Arnold, Jennifer and Kimberly Wynn, and Kelly Darrow; and her greatgrandchildren, Justin, Jessica and Jaclyn Arnold, Renee Ceil, Mallery Arnold, and Jill Irvine.

She was predeceased by her bother Howard and sisters Catherine Merritt and Vivian Shafer.

The family will greet relatives and friends at Old Mystic Baptist Church, Shewville Rd., on Tuesday from 10am until the time of the service at 11am. Burial will follow at Lambtown Cemetery. Donations may be made to Hospice of SECT, PO Box 902, Uncasville CT 06382.

POST-SERVICE OBITUARYMillie's service was conducted Tuesday officiated by the Rev. Lisabeth M. Gustafson. Hymns chosen included "What a friend we have in Jesus", "The Old Rugged Cross", and "Amazing Grace".

Personal family tributes were read by Rev. Gustafson as well as a moving note written by Millie to her family shortly before her passing.

Following the service, all gathered at Lambtown Cemetery for the committal service. Refreshments were provided by the church.
