Obituary

HIGH SPRINGS, FL – Marie L. (Moffett) Bates, 79, of High Springs, Florida and a former longtime resident of Springfield, was Called Safely Home on Saturday, December 3, 2022. She passed into Eternal Life at home surrounded by the care and comfort of her loving family. She was born in Springfield on October 13, 1943, a beloved daughter of the late James G. and Josephine A. (Gosselin) Moffett. She was raised and educated in Springfield where she lived until moving to Florida in 2005. She was employed for many years as a waitress at the former Lido Restaurant in Springfield. She was a horse trainer on the East Coast and California and also enjoyed breeding and racing horses. She was a longtime member of the Thoroughbred Owner’s and Breeder’s Association and the High Springs Chamber of Commerce. She leaves her beloved husband and best friend, David H. Bates. They were married in the Elvis Presley Chapel in Las Vegas, Nevada on September 21, 2005 and were blessed with over 17 years of happiness together. She also leaves her dear sister, Marilyn Rondeau and her husband, Thomas, of West Springfield; her dear brother, Thomas Moffett and his wife, Linda, of Florida; her dear sister in law, Barbara Moffett of Easthampton; and her many dear nephews, nieces, cousins and extended family members. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her beloved son, Robert J. LaBrie who was Called Home on January 14, 2004; her dear sister, Lorraine Minor who was Called Home on December 29, 2018; and her two dear brothers, George Moffett and Joseph Moffett. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 beginning at the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Springfield Chapels, (413-737-1177), 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA 01107, (funeral home will open at 8:30 a.m.), followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. at Saint Anthony Maronite Catholic Church, 419 Island Pond Road, Springfield, MA 01118. Her burial will follow the Mass at Saint Michael Cemetery, 1601 State Street, Springfield, MA 01109. Her family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, December 14, 2022 from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. prior to her Mass. In lieu of flowers, her family requests that memorial donations be made in her memory to Saint Jude Children's Research Hospital, 501 Saint Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-9959.
