Obituary

Mary Lou (Barnes) Hunt, 82, of Lowell, passed away after a brief illness at Lowell General Hospital on Monday, November 28, 2022. She was the widow of the late Leo B. Hunt who passed away in April of 1994.

She was born September 24, 1940, in Lowell, raised and educated in the city,  and was the daughter of the late Raymond and the late Gertrude Barnes.

She made her lifelong home in Lowell and was a communicant of St. Margaret of Scotland Parish and St. Rita’s Parish. She spent about 10 years working for Solomon Health Care before spending years as a home health care specialist prior to her retirement.

Mary Lou was the sweetest, kindest woman, who was small in frame, but took up an enormous amount of space in our hearts and in our lives. She enjoyed the small things in life. In her more recent years, you’d always find her with her daily caramel frappe spending some quality time with her favorite little pup, Roxy. She also loved sports, always rooting for her Red Sox and her Patriots. She was a wonderful cook, well renowned for her family-famous Thanksgiving stuffing. She wholeheartedly enjoyed cooking big meals for her big family, especially on holidays.

Mary Lou’s greatest passion and joy in life, above all else, was her family. They meant everything to her, as she lived an entirely selfless life and dedicated her existence to caring for them all. She brought true meaning to the term unconditional love, and was a devoted Mom, Nana, and Nannie right up until her final moments. She saw past everyone’s flaws and imperfections and saw only the good in them. She had 8 children, who gave her countless grandchildren and great grandchildren, and somehow was able to make each and every one feel like they were special, like they were her favorite. She was also very thrifty and clever and found ways to make sure everyone in the family always received gifts during the holidays. Mary Lou had a beautiful, infectious smile to go along with her wonderful sense of humor. She would always make people laugh, even sometimes unintentionally with her silly, light-hearted nature. Everyone who knew her, family and friends, described her as a true angel on earth.

Her survivors include her daughter, Diane Nolet and her husband, Rick, of Chelmsford, daughter Judy Jennison and her husband, Ed, of Lowell, daughter, Susan McMahon of Plaistow, NH, daughter, Cindy Hunt of Chelmsford, son, Scott Hunt of Lowell, son, Eric Hunt and his wife, Vicki, of Salem, NH, and son, Jason Hunt of Lowell; as well as several grandchildren and great grandchildren; her sister, Janet Shanahan of Chelmsford; and many nieces and nephews.

She was the mother of the late Leo Hunt, Jr. and mother in law of the late Lenny McMahon. Great grandmother of the late Taylor Salmonson.

She was also a sister of the late Raymond Barnes, Patricia Mcanistan, Virgina Ramsey, Jackie Barnes, Joan Woods, Charlie Barnes, and Donna Dowrey.
