Obituary

AGAWAM- Joan M. Schoolcraft, 87 of Agawam, MA was called safely home on Thursday December 1, 2022. Joan passed to eternal life unexpectedly at home. Joan was a long-time resident of Hungry Hill in Springfield and a devoted parishioner of the former Our Lady of Hope Church. A beloved daughter of the late John F. and Anna (Sullivan) Hickson, Joan was raised in Six Corners and graduated from Sacred Heart High School. She was a longtime employee of the US Postal Service where she worked as a Supervisor in the Payroll Division. Joan’s life and love was being a wonderful wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She loved caring for and spending time with her family, attending many activities and events which brought her great joy. Joan was predeceased by her beloved husband of 55 years John A. Schoolcraft (April 4, 2012) as well as her three loving sons, Richard, Michael, and Joseph and her three siblings Jack Hickson, Marian Megazzini, and Barbara O’Connor. Joan enjoyed spending time with her three sisters, most recently with Kay and The Sesame Seeds. A favorite activity was trying her luck at the casino with her sister Kay and her children. She leaves behind nine loving children, Stephen J. Schoolcraft (Mary Ennis) of Agawam, Donna M. Robillard (David), John F. Schoolcraft (Ann) of Springfield, Joan M, Menzel (Paul) of Westfield, Ann M. Thompson (Craig) of Agawam, Lynn Elmasian (Christian) of Springfield, Maureen A, Flaherty (Tom) of Westfield, Debbie A. Kiser of Charlotte, NC, and Mathew R. Schoolcraft (Tara) of Cummings, GA; her 23 grandchildren, Jessica, Stephen (Melissa), Erin, David, Ethan, Evan, Owen, Jordyn (Kevin), Sean, Lauren, Abigail, Emma, Michael, Matthew, Kailey, Megan, Thomas, Katelyn, Patrick, Nora, Morgan, Emily, Samantha; her great grandchildren; Logan, Ava, Nicholas, Copper, Oliver, and Hunter; her beloved sister “Kay” Lancour of Feeding Hills and many dear extended family members and friends. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday December 7, 2022, beginning at the St. Pierre-Phaneuf Springfield Chapels 7 Chapin Terrace, Springfield, MA (funeral home will open at 8:30 am) followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00 am at Sacred Heart Church 395 Chestnut Street Springfield, MA. Her burial will follow at St. Thomas Cemetery, 420 Kings Highway, West Springfield MA. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Tuesday December 6, 2022, from 4:00-7:00 pm.
