METHUEN: Lawrence A. McNeil, age 81, a resident of Methuen for 4 years, died Wednesday, May 24, 2006 at the Merrimack Valley Hospital in Haverhill.
He was the husband of the late Mary E. (Fabiano) McNeil.
Born in Cambridge on June 15, 1924, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Irene (Medeiros) McNeil.
Mr. McNeil was raised in Somerville and attended Somerville schools.
In 1943, he enlisted in the U.S. Army. Mr. McNeil served during World War II with Company H 169th Infantry Regiment. He was awarded several decorations and citations including the Combat Infantry Badge, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Campaign Ribbon with a Bronze Service Arrowhead and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with two Bronze Service Stars.
Prior to his retirement in 1986, Mr. McNeil worked as a meat cutter at markets in the greater Boston area including the former First National Store in Somerville.
He was a resident of the Cambridge and Somerville area for many years until moving to Methuen in 2002.
According to his family, he enjoyed playing cards.
He is survived by four children; Jean M. Haggerty and her husband John of Everett, Daniel A. McNeil and his wife Nellie of Maryland, Michael T. McNeil of Somerville and Catherine G. Souther and her husband David of Methuen; two sisters; Irene Seale and her husband David of Dedham and Shirley Voorhees and her husband William of California; one brother; William McNeil and his wife Barbara of Tewksbury; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
Mr. McNeil was the father of the late Richard McNeil and brother of the late John McNeil.
Calling hours Sunday, May 28th, 2-6 p.m., at the Farmer & Dee Funeral Home, 16 Lee St., Tewksbury. Followed by a prayer service at 6:30 p.m., at the funeral home. Interment at a later date at Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen St., Framingham, MA 01701 are requested.
