Obituary


Donald Paul Brown, 92, died on November 7, 2022 at Fairview Nursing Home in Groton, CT. Born on July 2, 1930 in Kirkwood, MO, he was the son of George Herbert and Helen (Mellor) Brown.

He is survived by the love of his life, his wife of 60 years, Robin Haskin Brown. He is also survived by three children - Suzi Huisman of Hilton Head, SC, Archie (Chipper) Brown of Milford, NH, and Jennifer Panosky of North Stonington, CT, their spouses, seven grandchildren and several great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his sister Georgia Augenstein, his son Steven Brown of Farmingville, NY, and his granddaughter Wendy Brown.

Don had a BA in business administration from Central College of Fayette, MO, and a BS in mechanical engineering from University of Colorado, Boulder. Don worked at Brookhaven National Laboratory in Upton, NY, from 1959 until his retirement in 1995. His specialty was cryogenics engineering, enabling ground-breaking physics discoveries in bubble chambers and particle accelerators. He held two patents.

Don and Robin lived in Bellport, NY then Southold, NY while he worked at BNL. In retirement they lived in Santa Fe, NM, then Mystic and Groton, CT. Don loved sailing, spending weekends and family vacations cruising on Great South Bay, Peconic Bay, and New England waters. In later years he carved amazing bird decoys and enjoyed tying flies and fly-fishing. He and Robin traveled frequently to England and square-danced with Surfside Eight in CT.

A memorial service will be held on January 14, 2023 at 11:00am at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 15 Pearl Street, Mystic, CT.
