Obituary

Electra M. (Marinakis) Maravelis passed away peacefully at the Portsmouth Regional Hospital on Wednesday November 9th. She was 86. Raised and educated in Somerville, MA, Electra was the daughter of the late George N. and Anna (Alexis) Marinakis. A long-time resident of the Brick Bottom neighborhood in Somerville, Electra lived in Somerville until retiring to Windham, NH with her late husband Evan to be near her children and grandchildren.

A devout woman, Electra was very active in the Dormition of the Virgin Mary Church throughout her life. Remembered for her strong spirit and boundless generosity, she participated in many parish organizations and committees. For many years she worked at the Kennedy School in Somerville as a paraprofessional. Her nurturing spirit, there as in the parish, not only made her an effective educator, but also a second mother to those around her. Summers on Cape Cod in South Yarmouth were a wonderful time for Electra and her family. She delighted in having everyone together and enjoyed time with friends and family on South Middle Beach.

A loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother, Electra and Evan settled in Windham to be close to her children and grandchildren. Nanie never missed a game, birthday or graduation as her cherished grandchildren grew up. Holidays were always important times for gathering, and were a great opportunity for Electra to share her cooking, feed her family and share her love.

The beloved wife of the late Evangelos A. “Evan” Maravelis who passed away in 2012 and with whom she shared 46 years of marriage, Electra was a devoted mother to Lesleyann Splagounias and her husband Nick of Windham, NH, Arthur Maravelis and his wife Lois of North Andover, Alysia Redard and her husband Russell of Windham, NH. She was a loving “Nanie” to Alexa and Thomas Splagounias, Evan, James and Charlotte Maravelis, Christopher, Matthew and Nicholas Redard. Electra was preceded in death by her dear siblings and their spouses: the late Nicholas Marinakis and his wife Virginia, and Phyllis Dardoufas and her husband Kimon. She is also survived by many devoted nieces and nephews.
