Obituary

C. LEE SHACKFORD, JR., age 87, a Hingham resident for the past 65 years, died on Monday, May 22nd at his home after a brief illness. Lee was born in Brookline and was a graduate of Newton High School. In his youth, he summered in Hingham, during which time he raced sailboats at the Hingham Yacht Club where his family were longtime members. He was Director of Agent Finance for New England Life Insurance Co. for 43 years. During World War II, he fought in Germany with the U.S. Army and received the Bronze Star and many other medals. He remained active in the Army Reserve for many years and attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. Lee was also an active member of the Edward Ball Cole American Legion Post # 120 in Hingham. In addition, he was an accomplished bagpipe player and performed in the Bagpipe Festival in Edinburgh, Scotland during the late 1970's. He and his wife, Ruth F. (Pike) Shackford, enjoyed traveling and took many trips together, including crossing America, Hawaii, Canada and Europe where they retraced his wartime experiences. Lee was a member of the Red Sox Nation and loved animals and nature.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, William M. Shackford and his wife Lynda, and granddaughter, Glowyn M. Waterhouse and her husband Campbell all of Hingham. He was also the father of the late Elizabeth Lee Hentz.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend memorial visiting hours at the Downing Cottage Funeral Chapel, 21 Pond St., Hingham on Thursday afternoon from 2-4 PM.

The funeral services and interment are to be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Edward Ball Cole American Legion Post # 120, P.O. Box 72, Hingham, MA 02043.
