NANCY (SHARP) SMITH, age 83, of Weymouth, formerly a Hingham resident for 55 years, died on Sunday, April 9th, 2006 at her home after a long illness. She was born in Boston and was the daughter of the late Edward and the late Florence (Forrestall) Sharp of Newton and Brookline. She was a graduate of Newton High School and attended Guilford College and Curry College. She is descended from John Robinson, pastor to the pilgrims, whose writings are read and words still quoted to this day.
She and her late husband, Lucius Smith, Jr. were married during World War II. Their first child was born while her husband was at war. They moved to Hingham in 1950 to raise their family and in 1974, they founded the Hingham Real Estate Company, which is now owned by their daughter, Bonnie Handrahan.
Mrs. Smith was an avid tennis player, swimmer and loved gardening. She was especially proud of her roses. She and her husband loved to travel and made trips to many countries including visits to their son and daughter in Africa, Europe and Hawaii. As her husband was a prisoner of war during World War II, they attended several P.O.W. reunions, including one in Milano, Italy. Mrs. Smith was a member of the Hingham Congregational Church, the Hingham Historical Society, the Hingham Ladies Club and volunteered her time to many charitable organizations.
She is survived by her two daughters; Carol S. Esau of Dowell, MD and Bonnie S. Handrahan of Hingham; her son, Lucius Douglas Smith of Kabul, Afghanistan, 6 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren and 9 nieces and nephews. She was the sister of the late Barbara (Sharp) Alexander Curtis.
