Obituary

Maria L. (Veiga) Melo, 85, a longtime Lowell resident, passed away unexpectedly on Monday, October 24, 2022 at Lowell General Hospital. She was the widow of Valdemiro C. Melo who passed away in 1989.

She was born on August 1, 1937 in Graciosa, Azores, Portugal, a daughter of the late Manuel Veiga and the late Leonor (Candida) Veiga. She was raised and educated in Graciosa. In 1973, along with her husband, she came to the United States and settled in Lowell. She first worked at Paris Shoe as a machine operator where she stayed for a number of years. Then she worked at Prince Grotto, Commodore Foods and Comet, where she retired from at age 62. She loved to crochet and embroidery. She was a passionate fan of professional wrestling and attending a live wrestling event was one of the highlights of her life.

She is survived by her 4 children, Manuel L. Melo and his wife, Natalia, of Lowell, Valdemiro V. Melo of Hudson, NH, Rita M. Ghizzo and her husband, Adair, of Lowell, Carlos Melo and his wife, Millie, of Litchfield, NH; her grandchildren, Walter Bettencourt, Jr. and his fiance, Elizabeth, of Templeton, Cliff Bettencourt and his wife, Kimberly, of Lowell, Greg Bettencourt and his wife, Laura, of Lowell, Travis Bettencourt and his wife, Lauren, of Ashby, Kyle Melo of Lowell, Valdemiro Melo, Jr. of Everett, WA, Dennis Melo of Huntington, WV, Lucas Melo of Litchfield, NH; her great grandchildren, Calvin, Ava, Alana, Nicholas, Aiden, Chase, Valdemiro III and Kehlani Rae. She is also survived by a sister, Celeste Veiga of Graciosa, Azores, Portugal; she is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

All are welcome to attend her visitation from 4 until 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 27 at the MCDONOUGH FUNERAL HOME, 14 HIGHLAND STREET, LOWELL, MA 01852 - 978-458-6816.

On Friday, you are also welcome to attend her funeral, which will begin at 10 a.m. at the funeral home. Her Funeral Mass will be offered at St. Anthony’s Church, 893 Central Street, Lowell, MA at 11.
