Obituary

Cecil Edward Smith, Sr. 89, of Fitzgerald, Georgia, died Friday, September 23, 2022, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held 2:30, Sunday, September 25, 2022, at the Calvary Holiness Campground, with the Rev. Jody Silvers and the Rev. Neil Bridges officiating. June Lewis will give the eulogy. Family remembrances will be given by the Rev. Edsel Young, the Rev. Joey Dean, the Rev. John Sewell, and the Rev. Luke Dean. Interment will follow in the New Corinth Calvary Holiness Church Cemetery. The family will receive friends 6-8 PM, Saturday evening at the Calvary Holiness Campground.

Mr. Smith was born December 29, 1932, in Coffee County, Georgia to the late Walter Lee & Liller Mae Hulett Smith. He was a lifetime farmer and a wonderful steward of the land that he was entrusted with. He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to hunt and fish. He especially enjoyed working on his place in Georgetown, fishing on Lake Walter F. George, and eating at Michelle’s restaurant with his wife was a favorite pastime as well. Mr. Smith was a man of great faith and was an active member and Deacon of New Corinth Calvary Holiness Church. He was instrumental in securing the land and helping to build the Calvary Holiness Campground and served as Chairman for many years. Mr. Smith loved being surrounded by his family and would often say he was responsible for them being there.

He is survived by his children: Jean Carol Ruis & Dewayne of Moultrie, Janice Young & Edsel of Wray, Cecil Edward “Eddie” Smith, Jr. & Shari of Fitzgerald, and Randall Smith & Teresa of Fitzgerald; grandchildren: Melanie Dean & Joey, Brian Ruis & Wendy, Jared Young & Lindsey, Janna Young Hutto, Sonya Sewell & John, Nicole Pennington & Matt, Jeffrey Smith & Stacie, Tyler Smith, and Kelby Smith; great-grandchildren: Luke, Landon, Ashton, Gracelyn, Alayna, Carolyna, Gunner, Jaylin, Emma, Madelyn, Whitley, Ansley, John Mark, Kaden, Carly, Brylee, and Adalyn; brother-in-law, Tillman Carver and two sisters-in-law: Pauline Spann and Frankie Smith; as well as several nieces and nephews and a host of friends. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Frances D. Smith; and siblings: Sarah Young, Bernard Smith, Fred Smith, Ruby Spires, Sue Griffin, Grover Smith, W. L. Smith, Jr., Clara Carver and three infant siblings.

The family suggests those desiring to send memorials may send them to New Corinth Calvary Holiness Church.
