Obituary

Joseph DeMedeiros Sardinha, 94, of New Bedford passed away Tuesday September 20, 2022. He was the husband of Madalena (Sousa) Sardinha.

Born in Agua Torta, St. Michael, Azores, the son of the late Manuel and Elvira (Medeiros) Sardinha, he lived in New Bedford for many years.

Mr. Sardinha was formerly employed by the New Bedford School Department until his retirement.

He was a longtime parishioner of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church where he served as a Eucharistic Minister, sang in the choir, and was once the President of the Holy Name Society and the Knights of Columbus. A member of the YMCA, he swam and played volleyball until the age of 90. His favorite pastime was watching soccer, especially his favorite team Benfica. Dad’s parting words were “Love you all.”

He is survived by his wife Madalena; his daughter, Olga O’Connor and her husband Robert V. O’Connor, Jr.; two granddaughters, Cara Elizabeth Sedgwick and her husband Matthew Sedgwick, and Callie Morgan Pimental and her husband Chad Pimental; and five great-grandchildren, Madelyn, Reagan, Sean, Benjamin, and Leah.

His Funeral will be held on Monday September 26th at 10 AM from the Saunders-Dwyer Home for Funerals, 495 Park St., New Bedford, followed by his Funeral Mass at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church at 11 AM.
