Obituary

Helena (Ferreira) Scondras, 79 of Lowell, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Saturday, September 17, 2022 at Lowell General Hospital due to complications from an auto immune disease. She was the widow of the late Christos Charles Scondras who passed away in 2020 after 55 years of marriage, and sister of the late Raymond Ferreira who passed away this past June.

She was born in Lowell on August 24, 1943 and was a daughter of the late Manuel R. Ferreira and the late Mary Caroline (Freitas) Ferreira. She was raised in Lowell, where she attended the area schools graduating from Lowell High School.

After Helen and Christos married, they resided in Oklahoma while he was in the United States Army. They settled in Lowell in 1969 where they raised their family making years of family traditions. She was an amazing host for parties with friends and family and celebrated every holiday. In her early years, she was very involved in her children’s lives and loved helping and volunteering at the schools at which her children attended. She was on the PTO board at the Morey and Daley School. She began her banking career in 1981 working at Lowell Institution for Savings, then in 1983 at Union National Bank in Lowell, starting as a teller, working her way up to Assistant Manager. She retired from the Sage Bank in 2009 as an Assistant Manager, where she made several lifelong friends. She loved to travel all around the world, and met up yearly with her sister and brother in law in the Netherlands. She loved crafting, enjoyed shopping, and loved entertaining.

Helena is survived by her two children, Mary C. Foley and her husband, Michael P. of Dracut, Charles E. Scondras of Lowell; her grandchildren, Kayla C. Foley and her fiancé, Jake Pugh, Nicholas M. Foley and his girlfriend, Jordan Parece, and Lauren E. Foley all of Dracut.

She is also survived by her sister, Rosemary Vaneijck and her husband, Maarten of Elsburg, Netherlands; her sisters in law, Catherine Ferreira of NH, and Antonia Tsakalakos of Lowell; her brother in law Steven Tsakalakos, James Scondras of South Carolina; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins including her favorite cousins, Linda Boisvert of Lowell, and Sue Surkis of Dracut.

On Wednesday, September 21, 2022 all are welcome to attend her calling hours from 4 - 8 p.m. at McDonough Funeral Home, 14 Highland Street, Lowell, 978-458-6816. Her funeral will begin on Thursday morning at 10 a.m. at Westlawn Cemetery on Boston Road in Lowell.
