Obituary

NORTH GROSVENORDALE, CT – James Dixwell “Jim” Reed, 83, died Thursday, September 15, 2022 at Day Kimball Hospital, Putnam after being stricken ill at home.

He leaves his wife of 54 years, Kathleen M. (Kuszewski) Reed; 3 children, Scott Allocca and his wife Sherrilynn of Poland Springs, ME, Sherry E. Ajami and her husband George of Pocasset, MA and Christine L. Hopkins and her husband Patrick of Killingly, CT; 7 grandchildren, Kristopher, Adelle, Austin, Amber, Justin, Madison and Kaleigh; nephews and nieces. He was preceded in death by his brothers John, William, Richard “Dickie” and Philip Reed. He also leaves his King Charles Cavalier dog “Molly.”

He was born in Washington, DC on December 10, 1938 and raised in Chevy Chase, MD, the youngest son of John Alden Reed and Emily (Chapin) Reed. He lived on Block Island, Narragansett, Central Falls and Pawtucket, RI, and in Bourne, MA before moving here in 2016.

Mr. Reed was an Air Force veteran of the Korean Conflict.

He was a welder at the General Dynamis Electric Boat Company in North Kingston, RI for 24 years before he retired.

Mr. Reed enjoyed fishing, cooking, gardening, camping and vacations with his family and friends. He also coached Pop Warner football in Pawtucket, RI while his daughters were part of the cheerleading team. He was a dedicated fan of the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. He attended his grandchildren’s sporting events and loved family gatherings.

Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 4:00 PM on Sunday, September 25, in Scanlon Funeral Service, 38 East Main Street, Webster, with a service at 3:30 PM with the Reverend Michael Bastien officiating. Donations in his name may be made to either St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or to the Providence VA Medical Center, 830 Chalkstone Avenue, Providence, RI 02908.
